Heavy rains may cause flash floods

ISLAMABAD, July 15: With the prediction of heavy rains in upper parts of the Punjab on Saturday and Sunday, the Met Office issued a weather warning saying that the rains could cause flash floods in the local rivers and streams.

 According to the Met Office, rains and heavy showers are expected in various parts of the country in the coming days.

 The satellite image at the Met Office website shows strong cloud formation over central Punjab and the Himalayan range including Kashmir.

 The Met Office has said the seasonal low pressure lies over North Balochistan, which is extending towards the northeastern parts of the country.

 As the strong monsoon currents are reaching upper parts of the country from the east, the western and the eastern parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will receive heavy rains.

 The authorities concerned have been advised to remain alert and take precautionary measures accordingly.

 It has said that widespread rain with isolated heavy showers are expected in five divisions of Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa including Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu, Hazara and D I Khan while parts of Kashmir and Gilgat-Baltistan may also receive shower.

 Mallamjabba on Thursday night/Friday received 62 mm rainfall while Dir received 43 mm rain. According to the Met Office, Islamabad and Rawalpindi will receive heavy downpour and Mianwali, Sarghodha and Khusahab districts are vulnerable to flash floods, while the monsoon spell arriving from the east is expected to bring heavy downpour in Chiniot, Faisalabad, Jhang, Mandi Bahaudin and Hafizabad. Light showers and isolated heavy rains have been forecast in Sahiwal and D G Khan divisions.

 Mandi Bahauddin received the heaviest rainfall of 75 mm on Thursday/Friday, Gujranwala 30 mm, Rawalakot 15 mm, Islamabad 16 mm and Rawalpindi 15 mm.

 Weather remained mostly humid in the country and the maximum temperatures recorded by the Met Office remained as Islamabad 34 C, Lahore 34 C, Karachi 35 C, Peshawar 36 C and Quetta 42 C. However, hot and humid weather is expected in most parts of upper Sindh and Balochistan in coming days.
